An extraordinary confluence of events, both environmental and geopolitical, have
coalesced to create a heightened risk and heightened awareness of disasters, emergencies
and epidemics. As the past year has shown, Ireland is far from being immune to this
uncertainty and challenge. International travel has seen the rapid spread of swine
flu, which originated in Mexico and spread to nearly every nation in a matter of
months. Recent severe weather conditions have seen a shortage of road salt supplies
resulting in a serious disruption of services, bringing large regions of this isle
to a standstill.
The flooding tragedy that afflicted this county in recent times has left some serious
questions remaining. What should be done next? What lessons can be drawn at this
stage? What measures need to be put in place in order to prevent the return of floods?
The National Emergency Management Summit seeks to assess future risks and articulate
practical approaches to strategies for planning, response and recovery. This event
will provide an insight into the challenges facing councils, and other parties in
maintaining services. It will look at managing the impact on communities, while
also keeping a focus on wider risks.
