Powering Renewable Energy for Ireland In March of 2008, ESB made a groundbreaking commitment to a sustainable future with the announcement of challenging targets to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2012, 50% by 2020 and to be net-carbon- neutral by 2035. We have already divested much of our older inefficient thermal plant and replaced it with highefficiency, combined cycle gas turbine (Aghada is the most efficient power plant in Ireland). We are making good progress in building our renewables portfolio based on wind and ocean. The future sustainable generation platform will be based on greatly expanded wind (> 30%) combined with clean coal and carbon capture and storage (CCS). The national target for Wind Power for 2020 is in excess of 5,000 MW. To accommodate this we need considerable investment in our infrastructure both at distribution and transmission levels. ESB has committed to this and has planned a major capital programme. We have also made great strides in making our networks smarter through initiatives such as SCADA, predictive fault location and intelligent re-closers. Smart Metering is central to smart networks. We installed over 10,000 meters in 2009 as part of our smart metering trial. This trial will determine the best technology option for ESB and includes the installation of in-home displays as part of a customer behaviour study. Demand management and storage are key enablers for greater penetration of renewable energy. ESB is supporting these aspects through the promotion of the adoption of electric vehicles and energy efficient / smart applications of electricity. To back up our drive for sustainable generation and smart networks, ESB has undertaken an intensive change programme within the company to embed sustainability in all of our operations and business processes.
RPS is a global energy firm with over 25 years’ experience of the Irish Energy business on an all island basis. We are market leaders in the planning, engineering, environmental and communications aspects of energy infrastructure with respect to the national electricity and natural gas grids together with associated interconnector projects. We are currently advising both public and private sectors on wind, wave and tidal power resources onshore and offshore. We have carried out a number of strategic renewable energy studies for government and are currently advising the three governments on the Offshore Renewable Infrastructure to connect wind, wave and tidal to the national grids in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland. We continue to work on the development of an extensive wind power portfolio in Ireland for both public and private sectors.

Northern Ireland is in an ideal position to help companies take advantage of opportunities in the renewables sector – especially offshore opportunities in wind and marine energy. It has a focused cluster of over 200 companies with specialisms in renewables. Harland & Wolff, once one of the biggest shipbuilders in Europe, has diversified into the assembly of wind turbines and marine energy devices such as Seagen. The first collaborations in renewables such as the Global Wind Alliance and the Global Maritime Alliance were set up in Northern Ireland. Invest Northern Ireland is the primary agency responsible for the development of the economy of Northern Ireland. Across its global network of offices, Invest NI provides business and financial support to assist companies to establish quickly and successfully, and to grow profitably.
